                                                         Mia Rose’s work transcends the boundaries of reality, taking her viewers on a journey through her therapeutic practice. Originally from Miami, FL, she takes on traditional textile-based techniques and incorporates them into maximalist quilts, wearables, and puppetry. She uses her craft as a vessel to inspect everything related to her entomophobia (phobia of insects), allowing her to explore her memories and dreams and manifesting them into a physical reality. Analyzing her role within her Colombian and American cultures also allows her to investigate her sexuality and identity as a Latina Woman.

Mia is a recipient of the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship and has had the opportunity to show her work internationally, including Canada (2025), Sweden (2022), and in multiple galleries in Chicago and Boston. Mia showcased her work at the annual Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington D.C, and was invited to attend a residency at the prestigious Vermont Studio Center. Mia is currently pursuing her MFA in Fashion, Body, & Garment at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a recipient of the New Artist Society Award.

ARTIST STATEMENT


    My practice is led by the exploration of my entomophobia and the intrapersonal relationship with my sexuality as a Latina woman. Using my phobia, the irrational fear of insects, as a conceptual mechanism, I explore themes of gendered aggression, childhood nostalgia, and the oversexualization of feminine aesthetics. Engaging with maximalism through feminist craft allows me to subvert what used to confine women and transform what it means to be a fiber artist by taking up space through femininity. Exploring nostalgic concepts of home, family, and my Colombian culture, I work with a variety of tactile materials that serve as comfortable vehicles for confronting traumatic experiences and conflicts endured by my body. The presence of my body serves as a base vessel for me to investigate my identity, as I engage with monumentality and feminist craft to take up space through femininity while redefining my own aesthetic aims through physicality.
